A.K.A Implant Retained Removable Prosthesis
Adding implants to a denture boosts the functionality of a denture many times over while giving you new confidence in your prosthesis.
What to expect
Multiple 1 Hr appointments
What it is
An implant retained denture can be used for:
- Affordable replacement of teeth
- Esthetic and significant functional improvements
- Increased comfort during wear and function
- Increased retention, up to 90% functionality of natural teeth
- Bone retention is increased due to presence of implants
However, an implant retained denture:
- May need periodic maintenance by your doctor
- Needs to be removed at night for hygiene reasons
How it is accomplished
Typically implants are placed at the first surgical appointment. If tooth removal is necessary it is accomplished during this appointment.
After tooth removal the process of denture fabrication begins with impression of residual ridges. After multiple fittings the final denture will feature an acrylic base that will support plastic teeth.
Once the final denture is fabricated special anchors are installed into the plastic base to enable the dentures snap onto the implant.
After this step the denture bases are trimmed to make them more comfortable for the patient.
Materials:
Acrylic
These prostheses are made of PMMA (poly-methyl-methacrylate) material. This type of acrylic is strong enough to support the chewing forces while offering a great degree of reparability and flexibility in future modifications. However the use of clasps and retentive features is limited.
